Design is an everyday occurrence. From the way we structure our lives to the way we live in our structures. We as humans use design as a fundamental component to better the quality of our lives.
From as far as I can remember I manifested a strong curiosity with forms and their functions, with a particular interest in their design intent. Curiosity has influenced my development as a designer, and to me design appears to be more than just bare walls and bare substance: it lives, breathes and develops thru time.
The most interesting part of a design or concept is how all its components are pieced together to create a living organism. Thru the many elements of design we can create a certain feeling which incurs an emotional response to the end user.
A built environment or object, although seemingly static, comes to life when inhabited or used. This aspect of design captures and inspires me on a daily basis.
Another important source of inspiration stems from the Mid-Century modern era. The creative minds of this period deconstructed the old ways of the bourgeoisie lifestyle, and redefined the way we look at life. The underlying message behind these changes implies a call for freedom of expression, innovation, and progress.
I prefer designs that are able to stand strong by themselves. They should show distinct character and individuality, and connect with the end user.
Since our senses are adjusted to perceive design, space influences the people occupying it while objects influence the people who use them. I pay particular attention to how we react to a space or object, but I also wonder who is behind that particular design and what the designer's original intention was. I express a constant curiosity towards the designer's context, motivation and the reverberation of the work onto present and future generations.
I believe that sincere design germinates from a moment of clarity, and is not derived from a set of theories or a deliberate process.
Although each project demands individual qualities and structure, one way in which I approach a project commences with foreseeing the end result. My thought process starts with envisioning the space or object, which generates a clear sense of direction and focus, beneficiary to the successful execution of the project.
We have all heard the saying that "everything has already been done" but this perception is not true. It is curiosity that drives us to create all the things that we surround ourselves with. The social evolution of mankind implies inspiration and progress, and the same principles apply to design.
With an understanding of the historical progress of our society and an eye on the personal desires and needs of any client, I put in context the individuality of the project at hand.
A desire to see the world for what it is, and not how it appears to be, is essential to my evolution and understanding of design. Exploring thru travel and research are important tools into educating ourselves and progressing as individuals.
As a creator at core I remain a student of design and continuously develop myself both as an individual and a professional.
